'Liberation Day' by Hugh Mullarkey

This play was staged at the Guernsey One Act Play Festival in May, 2005. The Guernsey One Act Play Festival is recognised nationally as being an excellent Festival with a very high standard of productions. The Festival is organised under the auspices of the Guernsey Amateur Dramatic and Operatic Club

'Liberation Day' featured a cast of 29 children, all under the age of 15.

It won 5 major Trophies at the Festival.

The adjudicator acknowledged that it was an extremely well-written and well-directed play which gave great scope to the actors and to the director.

The music is well written and the children enjoyed singing the songs.

This production conveyed to the audience the emotional upheaval experienced by the young evacuees when they were forced to leave their island home prior to the German occupation of Guernsey in 1940 and the joy which ensued when the island was liberated some five years later.

Members of the audience were very appreciative of the performance and for those who had experienced at first hand the trauma of those days in 1940 it brought back many very vivid memories. Many members of the audience were visibly 'moved' by the performance.

An excellent play which gave great enjoyment to both performers and audience.
