Three of English folk music’s high flyers - singer and fiddler Caroline Butler, cellist Gill Redmond, and oboist Charles Spicer of The Mellstock Band - spread their wings with a selection of music on the theme of birds. Like magpies, they have collected the sparkliest songs and tunes from the middle ages to the twentieth century. Naughty cuckoos, spiralling skylarks, jolly robins, and dark mysterious ravens trill music from Henry Purcell to Hoagy Carmichael while their musical nest is lined with riches from the folk tradition.

Charles has played and sung for the National Theatre and the RSC. He was a founder member of the multicultural band Boka Halat, and played oboe and cor anglais with guitarist Rajan Spolia. He wrote the musical arrangements for The Oxford Waits, and is a member of The Mellstock Band who often welcome both Caroline and Gill to join them in concert and on recordings.

Caroline Butler

Caroline was in the legendary folk punk band Jumpleads. She sings and plays baroque violin with seventeenth century music group The Oxford Waits, and is a stalwart of Oxfordshire’s West Gallery choir The Christminster Singers. Caroline plays fiddle with dance band Geckoes and its smaller offshoot Chameleons.

Gill Redmond

Gill plays cello in duos with concertina player Dave Townsend, fiddlers Sarah Matthews and Göran Premberg, and singer/songwriter Graham Moore. She has played with dance band Peeping Tom and with The New Mantovani Orchestra, and is a member of the Sam Newgarth Light Orchestra and ceilidh band Jigfoot.
