Flag of the Batwa People

We began our work with Voluntary Service Overseas (VSO) at Bwindi Community Health Centre in Uganda, close to the Democratic Republic of Congo border in April 2006. It is an outstandingly beautiful area, famous for mountain Gorillas and hundreds of local bird species. The Health Centre was set up in 2003 by US missionaries Scott and Carol Kellermann particularly to care for hundreds of Batwa pygmies who have been displaced from their natural habitat in the forest. They are some of the poorest people on earth, with annual household incomes measured at around US$ 25. Under-five mortality for landless Batwa exceeds 60% and many women die in childbirth. Most people around here live on almost nothing, and the clinic provides healthcare for an area covering 40,000 people. Please read our journal and send us your messages, comments on our work and adventures and ideas for the site.

We have decided that we will be staying at Bwindi Community Health Centre beyond March 2008 (our initial date for departure). We are not sure how long we will stay – it will probably be somewhere from 3-9 months extra.
